There May Be Danger Ahead (Hunting Party on Mountain Trail) by Charles M. Russell
About the Work
Painted in the drab browns and flat blues typical of Russell's work in this period, There May Be Danger Ahead shows a group of warriors descending a steep mountain trail en route to enemy country. Although they may be intent on horse theft, more likely they are looking for game, though naturally they would not pass up the chance to kill and butcher a stray cow or steal a few horses. Garbed in a mix of white and traditional costume, armed with rifles and riding scrub ponies, they are the very sort Russell encountered in Montana in the 1880's.
