ROUNDED-UP BY FREDERIC REMINGTON

Frederic Remington Rounded-Up 1901 Oil on canvas 25 inches x 48 inches |
| While Rounded-Up does demonstrate the realism for which Remington was known, it is strangely placid for the action it portrays. The troopers are unaccountably passive in their predicament. From the distance and lack of menace in the circling Indians, it appears that a determined show of force on the part of the soldiers could lift the siege. The plain is flat, the enemy visible and the path of honor open and shown. One can understand the officer standing erect directing the defense as bullets whiz by, but the actions and exposure of the scouts and other troopers are hard to explain. Remington may be conveying misgivings about the actions shown or perhaps mirroring his feelings following his first direct exposure to warfare in Cuba. |
